The Journey
Lachlan Maher is one of Upper 90 College's most pedigree-packed goalkeeper success stories – a Sydney-born shot-stopper who came through the Central Coast Mariners A-League Academy, signed with Sydney United 58 (the elite Sydney goalkeeper academy), and was named in the NSW Schoolboys State Team before being placed by Upper 90 College at Newberry College in South Carolina. Growing up in Sydney, Lachlan's goalkeeping development pathway was exceptional by any measure. As a freshman in high school, he signed with the Central Coast Mariners A-League Academy. As a sophomore, he was selected for the Australian National Team U15/16 camp. As a junior, he was named in the NSW Schoolboys State Team and signed with Sydney United 58 – one of Australia's most celebrated goalkeeper development environments. Upper 90 College recognised Lachlan's elite pedigree and placed him at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina – an NCAA Division II program competing in the South Atlantic Conference. In his sophomore year (2022), Lachlan made two appearances including a start against USC Aiken, logging 118 minutes and keeping a clean sheet. In his junior year (2023), he earned the Deans List in both semesters, combining academic excellence with continued development as a goalkeeper for the Wolves. Lachlan's journey from the Central Coast Mariners Academy to the South Atlantic Conference represents the full potential of the Upper 90 pathway for elite youth goalkeepers.
Challenges Overcome
Coming from the A-League Academy environment to the physical demands of NCAA D2 South Atlantic Conference soccer required Lachlan to adapt his game rapidly. Keeping a clean sheet in just his second collegiate appearance demonstrated his elite readiness.
