A scholarship offer can look life-changing on paper. But the number printed at the top of the letter is not necessarily the amount your family will save.
For Australian families, the real question is not simply, "How much scholarship did my child receive?" It is: "What will we still need to pay each year?"
A 50% scholarship at a very expensive university can leave a larger bill than a smaller scholarship at a more affordable program. The percentage is only useful when you understand the starting cost.
What the Scholarship May Cover
Depending on the school and the offer, athletic and academic scholarships may contribute toward tuition, mandatory fees, room and board. The exact package varies significantly between NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and NJCAA programs.
Some schools can combine athletic and academic support. That is where a strong academic profile can become valuable: the academic award may reduce the remaining gap after the athletic scholarship is applied.
But families should never assume that "full scholarship" means every cost disappears.
The Costs That Often Sit Outside the Offer
Flights are one of the biggest differences for Australian athletes. A family may need to budget for travel at the beginning and end of the academic year, and sometimes additional travel for holidays or family visits. Two international return trips can easily represent several thousand Australian dollars each year.
Health insurance is another important line item. International students are commonly required to hold approved coverage, either through the university or an accepted alternative. Depending on the institution and the policy, this can add roughly $1,000–$2,000 per year.
Books, student fees, equipment and other campus charges can add another $1,000–$2,000. Winter clothing and gear can also surprise students arriving from Australia, particularly when they are placed in colder regions of the US.
Then there is day-to-day living: phone bills, toiletries, local transport, food outside the meal plan and spending time with teammates. A realistic personal budget may add several thousand dollars across the year.
Why the School's Total Cost Matters
Imagine two offers.
School A offers 50% at a university costing $60,000 per year. The remaining tuition and institutional costs may still be substantial.
School B offers a smaller percentage at a university with a much lower total cost. The final family contribution could be lower at School B, even though the scholarship percentage looks less impressive.
This is why comparing scholarship percentages alone can lead families in the wrong direction. The correct comparison is the total annual cost after every confirmed source of aid has been applied.
Academic Money Can Change the Calculation
A student's academic results can be one of the most valuable parts of the overall package. Athletic aid and academic scholarships may be combined, depending on the school's policies and the athlete's profile.
Over four years, even a moderate academic award can materially reduce the family's contribution. That is why academic performance should be treated as part of the recruiting strategy, not as a separate issue from soccer.
The Right Question to Ask
Instead of asking, "Can my child get a scholarship?" families should ask:
"What is the realistic net cost at each suitable program, and can our family sustain it for four years?"
The best college soccer outcome is not always the biggest percentage or the most famous division. It is the program where the athletic fit, academic opportunity, environment and total cost work together.
That requires comparing real offers, not just headline numbers.
At Upper 90 College, the goal is to match Australian athletes with programs that fit both their football level and their family's financial reality. A scholarship only works if the remaining cost is manageable.
