The Journey
Tony Lo is one of Upper 90 College's standout alumni – a story of grit, academic excellence, and sustained performance at the NCAA Division II level over four full seasons. Growing up in Sydney, Tony developed his game at Westfield Sports High School and spent four formative years in the Sydney FC academy system (ages 14–18), also earning selection into the Australian U17 Joey's National Team in 2011. His talent was clear, but like many Australians, he needed a pathway to unlock his potential. After being placed at Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Tony quickly proved himself. He started in 14 of 16 games as a freshman, finished tied for the team lead in points, and was named CoSIDA Academic All-District and the Division II Athletics Directors Academic Achievement honoree in his first year alone. Over four seasons, Tony became one of the Coyotes' most consistent performers. In his final year he was named All-CCAA Second Team and CCAA Player of the Week after a three-goal week. He played all 17 games with 12 starts and finished second on the team in goals. Off the field, Tony maintained a 3.85 GPA in biology, earned multiple academic honours, and graduated with the kind of platform that has launched a career in coaching and football administration. Since graduating, he has coached with Football NSW's National Youth Championships U16 Girls team and mentored the next generation of Australian footballers exploring the US college pathway.
Challenges Overcome
Adapting to the intense CCAA conference – one of the most competitive in NCAA Division II – as an 18-year-old from Australia was no small feat. Tony had to quickly adjust to a new country, a new culture, and a college system that demands excellence in both the classroom and on the pitch. Maintaining a near-4.0 GPA in biology while competing at a high level across four seasons demonstrated exceptional dedication.
Achievements
2017 All-CCAA Second Team. CCAA Player of the Week (Oct. 2017). CoSIDA Academic All-District (2015). CCAA All-Academic multiple seasons. Led CSUSB in goals in freshman year (5 goals). Played all 17 games in senior season. 3.85 GPA in biology. Member of Australian U17 Joey's National Team (2011).
"The US college experience shaped me as a player, a student, and a person. I wouldn't trade it for anything."
