Athletic Scholarship – NCAA Division I

Sandra Hill — NCAA Division I soccer player at Grand Canyon University, placed by Upper 90 College

The Journey

Sandra Hill grew up in Canberra, Australia, and developed through the Capital Football pathway before catching the attention of Upper 90 College founder John Stevanja. As a technically sound and physically imposing defender, Sandra was identified as an ideal fit for the NCAA Division I women's soccer environment. She signed with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona – one of the fastest-growing NCAA Division I programs in the Western Athletic Conference. At GCU, Sandra competed at the highest level of college soccer in the US, developing under a professional coaching staff and competing against some of America's top collegiate talent. Over five seasons at GCU (with an extra year due to the NCAA COVID waiver), Sandra became one of the program's most consistent contributors. She appeared in 17 matches in her fifth and final season, demonstrating the kind of resilience and longevity that defines the best international student-athletes. Her story is a testament to the possibilities that open up when Australian footballers are matched with the right college environment. Sandra's journey from Canberra to one of the most prominent NCAA D1 campuses in the US Southwest is one Upper 90 College is proud to have facilitated.

Challenges Overcome

As a defender transitioning from the Australian football environment to NCAA Division I, Sandra faced the demands of competing at one of the most physically intense levels in world college sport. Building her reputation from scratch in a new country, adapting to a new culture, and managing the academic rigour of GCU alongside elite athletic competition required extraordinary discipline.

Achievements

Five seasons at Grand Canyon University (NCAA Division I). Appeared in 17 matches in her fifth year. Competed at the WAC level in NCAA D1 Women's Soccer. Represented GCU across multiple seasons as one of a very small number of Australian women playing D1 soccer.
