The Journey
Marcus Plataniotis’s journey to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is one of the most remarkable comeback stories in the Upper 90 College alumni community – a Drummoyne, NSW-born defender who spent two seasons on the bench at St. Mary’s University before transferring to Hawaii and becoming one of the program’s most important players. Growing up in Drummoyne, NSW, and attending Sydney Boys High School, Marcus was placed by Upper 90 College at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. After logging limited minutes across the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Marcus made the bold decision to transfer to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo – a PacWest Conference D2 program on the Big Island. The transfer transformed his college career. After his redshirt year, Marcus logged zero minutes through 2021 before breaking through decisively in 2022. In September 2022, he was named KTA Super Stores Superstar of the Week after a match-defining header goal in the 82nd minute – his first collegiate goal. He also earned the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award in both 2021 and 2022, reflecting his excellence in the classroom. Marcus’s story is a powerful reminder that the US college pathway requires patience and belief. His breakthrough in Hawaii – scoring his first career goal and earning athlete of the week recognition in the same season – was one of Upper 90’s most celebrated moments.
Challenges Overcome
Logging minimal minutes across two seasons at St. Mary’s before transferring to Hawaii required tremendous resilience. Going through a redshirt year at Hilo before breaking through with a game-defining goal in 2022 was the ultimate reward for persistence.
Achievements
KTA Super Stores Superstar of the Week (Sept. 2022). Match-winning header goal in the 82nd minute (2022). 2x D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award (2021, 2022). PacWest Conference D2 starter. Career journey: Sydney → St. Mary’s (TX) → UH Hilo (HI).
"Hawaii gave me the chance I’d been waiting for. That goal in the 82nd minute made every moment of patience worth it."
