Ian Ballantyne
U Sports – UBC Okanagan
British Columbia, Canada
From: Moreton City Excelsior FC (NPL Queensland)
U Sports placement - UBC Okanagan, Kelowna, BC (2026)

The Journey
Ian Ballantyne is a central midfielder from Moreton City Excelsior FC in NPL Queensland who signed with UBC Okanagan in May 2026, becoming one of Upper 90 College's first U Sports placements. A dual Australian-Canadian citizen, Ian holds a Canadian passport through his family, which made him eligible as a domestic student-athlete in the Canadian system. His journey to UBC Okanagan was built on patience and the right fit rather than speed. In November 2024, Ian travelled to British Columbia with his father to trial at four universities: UBC Vancouver (fresh off their U Sports national championship), UBC Okanagan, Thompson Rivers University, and the University of the Fraser Valley. He trained with coaches, walked the campuses, and assessed each program. While UBC Vancouver tentatively offered a spot and UBC Okanagan signalled interest with scholarship support, Ian needed to complete a mathematics prerequisite for Canadian university entry. He spent 2025 at the University of Queensland completing the requirement, then reapplied. In May 2026, he officially signed with UBC Okanagan under head coach Dante Zanatta, who has led the Heat program since 2014 and surpassed 50 career Canada West regular-season victories. Ian was a U90C client since 2022 — a four-year relationship that exemplifies how the right pathway sometimes requires patience, planning, and the willingness to take the road less travelled.
Challenges Overcome
Ian's path required patience. After trialling at four Canadian universities in November 2024, he needed to complete a university-level mathematics prerequisite not yet satisfied in his Australian schooling. Rather than rush, he spent a year at the University of Queensland completing the requirement before reapplying and committing to UBC Okanagan in May 2026 — four years after first joining the U90C program.
Achievements
Signed with UBC Okanagan (Kelowna, BC) in May 2026 for the 2026-27 U Sports season. Captain of Moreton City Excelsior FC U23 squad. Twice selected for Queensland State Team at Australian National Championships. Holds Canadian passport (dual Australian/Canadian citizen). Trialled at UBC Vancouver, UBC Okanagan, Thompson Rivers, and Fraser Valley in November 2024.
