Athletic Scholarship – NAIA
The Journey
Daniel McBriarty's journey from Sydney's Eastern Suburbs to the heartland of Nebraska is a story that captures the spirit of what the NAIA offers Australian footballers – a genuine scholarship, elite competition, and a life-changing college experience. Growing up in Sydney and attending Waverley College, Daniel developed into a composed, technically gifted midfielder with the engine and intelligence to thrive at the next level. Upper 90 College founder John Stevanja identified him as a perfect fit for the NAIA environment – athletic, hardworking, and hungry to prove himself far from home. Placed at Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska, Daniel became a key contributor over four seasons. As a freshman in 2015, he appeared in all 20 games, started 13, and registered seven points (3 goals, 1 assist), earning Honorable Mention All-GPAC recognition. Over subsequent seasons he developed into one of the team's leaders, starting regularly and cementing his place in the lineup. Since returning to Australia, Daniel has leveraged his US college experience into a media and content career, building an audience of hundreds of thousands across YouTube and TikTok as a football presenter and commentator under the handle @dmac_ig. His story illustrates that the US college pathway creates not just better footballers, but well-rounded, high-achieving individuals.
Challenges Overcome
Moving from Sydney to rural Nebraska as a teenager required significant personal resilience. The GPAC conference is one of the most competitive in the NAIA, and Daniel had to adapt quickly to the physicality of American college soccer while managing the academic demands of college life far from home.

"The NAIA gave me the chance to compete at a real level while getting a degree – it set me up for everything that came after."
